As a Māori business owner, reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the profound impact that embracing my heritage has had on my life and work. My name is James Reti, and my journey towards appreciating the significance of Māori principles in organisational development has been transformative.

My journey into the world of positive psychology provided me with valuable insights into human behaviour and well-being. I have learnt the profound impact that organisational culture has on individual and collective flourishing. Importantly, I also began to see parallels between the values of great organisations and the tikanga Māori that was taught to me.

I founded Reti Consulting with a vision for Māori organisations to embed the power of Māori principles within their organisational culture. Integrating concepts such as manaakitanga (generosity/hospitality), whanaungatanga (relationships through working together) and kotahitanga (unity/shared sense of belonging) into organisational practices creates environments where individuals feel valued, supported and empowered to thrive.

The meaning of the whakatauki at the beginning of this section cannot be reduced to a singular interpretation. To me however, it roughly translates as ‘we are all in this together’. The best organisation's not only realise this simple truth, but adopt organisational practices that ensure it remains front of mind. Creating an organisational culture which ensures every individual understands and remembers that they are valued, that they share a common purpose, and that they each have an individual role to play in the wider organisation’s success is critical.

Through Reti Consulting, I am committed to guiding organisation's in creating and embedding these organisational practices and creating a culture underpinned by enduring Māori values. In my work, I am driven by a deep sense of purpose – to honour and utilise mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and create a legacy of positive change in the world. I am inspired by the resilience and enduring strength of my tupuna (ancestors), and I am dedicated to ensuring that their voices are heard, and their values are honoured in every aspect of organisational life.

As I continue on this journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to blend my passion for positive psychology with my commitment to te ao Māori. Together, we can create workplaces where individuals are empowered to bring their whole selves to work, where diversity is celebrated, and where the spirit of collaboration and connection flourishes.
